How IFS therapy works

IFS sees your mind as a community of “parts.” You might have a part that feels anxious, another that’s critical or perfectionistic, and another that just wants to keep the peace. None of these parts are bad—they’re simply trying to help in the only way they know how, often carrying burdens from the past. Beneath all of these parts is your Self—a calm, compassionate, and wise inner presence that can lead the way toward healing.

In an IFS counselling session, we gently turn toward the parts of you that feel stuck, overwhelmed, or protective. Rather than pushing them away, we approach them with curiosity and care. Through this process, your parts begin to feel understood and supported, which helps them soften and release the roles they’ve been holding. You don’t need to relive painful memories—instead, we focus on creating a sense of safety and connection in the present moment.

A typical session may involve slowing down, noticing where a feeling or thought lives in your body, and exploring what it needs. Together, we build a compassionate relationship with these inner parts, allowing more space for clarity, self-acceptance, and lasting change.
